Union County, Illinois was established in 1818, the same year Illinois was recognized for statehood. County formation in Illinois dates to 1779 when the "County of Illinois" was established by the Virginia legislature. In 1784, Virginia relinquished their claims to Illinois to the federal government which in 1787 passed an act for the government of the Northwest Territory - of which Illinois was a part. General Arthur St. Clair was appointed governor of the territory and on April 27, 1790, organized by proclamation, the county of St. Clair. |
